UGX 700 vs UGX 15,000 per 100 km
Two numbers explain why delivery riders are switching. Moving 100 km on a petrol boda boda burns about UGX 15,000 of fuel. Moving the same 100 km on an electric bike uses about UGX 700 of electricity. That is a twenty-fold difference, paid every single working day.
Run the month. A courier covering 100 km a day, 26 days a month, spends around UGX 390,000 on petrol. The same work on a Karaa costs about UGX 18,000 in electricity. The difference, UGX 372,000 a month, is more than many riders’ rent.
Petrol is only half the bill. A motorcycle needs oil, filters, plugs and engine service every month. An electric bike has no engine to service: no oil, no filters, no carburettor. The motor is warranted for 10,000 km or a year, the battery for 500 charge cycles.
A Karaa Range kit costs UGX 1,650,000. Against savings of roughly UGX 370,000 a month, the kit pays for itself in under five months. After that, the savings belong to the rider.
