Electric bikes for farmers: what a removable battery can power beyond the ride
Karaa's removable battery could do more than move the bike. What that means for farmers, cooperatives and community health workers.
A Karaa battery doesn’t stop working when the ride ends. We are developing ways for the removable pack to run lights and small appliances at home, the same battery a farmer, a cooperative worker or a community health worker relies on to reach the next stop faster during the day.
Community health workers in Africa already use bicycles heavily, and the evidence for it is strong: an IDinsight study of World Bicycle Relief’s programme in Zambia found health workers with a bicycle served 63% more households than those without one. That research is about a standard bicycle. Nobody has written about what changes when the same worker’s bicycle is electric, faster over the same rural distances, and carrying a battery that does more than move the wheels.
The idea is that a battery taken off the bike at the end of a round still has a job to do: keeping a vaccine cold-box running for a few hours during outreach, or running a torch or small lights on a farm after dark. That work is in development, not a feature you can buy today. It would be the same 36V pack that gets the bike from farm to market and back, put to work again once the ride is done.
This matters for cooperative and NGO buyers specifically, not just individual riders. A health programme or farming cooperative choosing between a standard bicycle and a Karaa-converted one is buying faster transport today and, once this work is ready, a portable power source too.
