From bicycle to boda boda to electric

The bicycle has carried goods and people in East Africa for over a century. The petrol motorcycle, the boda boda, arrived later and took the routes that needed more speed and load than legs alone could give. Each step traded running cost for capability.

The next step isn’t a new vehicle category. It’s electrifying the one already in the widest use. A motor and a battery turn a standard bicycle into something that carries 100 kg at 32 km/h assisted, over up to 120 km on a charge, without the fuel bill or the licence a motorcycle needs.

There’s precedent for this exact move.

Honda began in the 1940s selling small motors that bolted onto bicycles, through bicycle shops, years before it built a motorcycle. The conversion kit was the on-ramp to a much bigger business, because it met people on the vehicle they already owned rather than asking them to buy something new first.

The same logic applies across East Africa today. Buffalo bicycles alone are in the hundreds of thousands across Zambia, Malawi and Kenya. Most are working bikes: farm, delivery, water-carrying. A Karaa kit converts one of those bicycles rather than competing with it, at UGX 1,650,000 for the long-range Karaa Range kit, fitted.

What doesn’t change, and what does.

The frame, the saddle, the bike a rider trusts, stays the same. What’s added is the motor, the removable 36V battery, and an app with several assist modes. Kits are assembled locally in Kampala, so fitting and servicing don’t wait on a shipment from abroad.
