Why removable batteries win in Africa
Battery design sounds like a technical detail until the lights go out. A fixed battery ties the whole bike to wherever the power is. A removable battery goes to the power: into the house, the shop, the kiosk with the solar system, while the bike stays outside working or parked.
Every Karaa battery is removable. It slides off the frame, weighs about as much as a full jerrycan, and charges from an ordinary wall socket for about UGX 700 per full charge, up to 120 km of range on the Karaa Range battery.
Serious riders carry two. A spare battery costs UGX 825,000, and the swap takes seconds: one charges while the other earns. A courier doing 150 km days never stops moving; a market trader charges overnight at home where electricity is cheaper than in town.
The battery is also the household’s power bank. It runs lights, charges phones, and can drive a small water pump, which is why some owners bought the bike for transport and kept it for the electricity.
Batteries carry a warranty of 500 charge cycles or one year, and replacements are on the shelf in Kampala, not on a ship.
