What an electric bike costs in Africa in 2026
An electric bike in Africa costs between roughly $270 and $900, depending on one decision: convert the bicycle you already own, or buy one ready-built.
Converting is the cheaper path. A Karaa conversion kit starts at UGX 990,000 (about $268) for the short-range Karaa Lite, and UGX 1,650,000 (about $446) for the long-range Karaa Range, which does up to 120 km on a charge. Your bicycle keeps its frame, its saddle and its history; it gains a motor, a removable battery and an app.
A complete electric bike, built on the Buffalo utility bicycle, starts at UGX 2,950,000 (about $797). Add GPS tracking and remote lock for UGX 280,000 more.
The number that matters most comes after the purchase. About UGX 700 of electricity moves an electric bike 100 km. The same distance on a petrol boda boda costs around UGX 15,000. A rider covering 100 km a day keeps what a motorcycle burns.
