How to convert a bicycle to electric
Converting a bicycle to electric takes three steps. In our Kampala workshop, the whole job takes about an hour.
- Fit the motor wheel. The front wheel is replaced with a 250W geared hub motor wheel, built to match your bike’s size.
- Mount the battery. The removable battery mounts to the frame, wired to the controller.
- Pair the app. The controller pairs to the Karaa app on your phone, which sets your ride mode: eco, climbing, manual or cargo.
Most bicycles qualify. The kit needs 26-inch or 29-inch wheels, a sound frame and working brakes. That covers the vast majority of bicycles working across Africa today, including every Buffalo model. Not sure about yours? Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will confirm in minutes.
The box contains the motor wheel, the removable battery, the controller, a charger and the fittings. Nothing about your bicycle is thrown away except the old front wheel, and you keep that too.
Once fitted, you pedal as before; the motor works with you. Hills flatten out. Headwinds stop mattering. The battery charges from any wall socket, the same one that charges your phone.
The Karaa Lite kit costs UGX 990,000 and does up to 60 km per charge. The Karaa Range kit costs UGX 1,650,000 and does up to 120 km. Both carry a motor warranty of 10,000 km or one year.
