How to convert a bicycle to electric
Swap in a motor wheel, mount the battery, pair the app. Most bicycles qualify. Here is how conversion works.
To convert a bicycle to electric, a mechanic swaps the rear wheel for a hub-motor wheel, mounts a removable battery on the frame and pairs the controller with an app. The Karaa Range kit does this for UGX 1,650,000, fitted, on most bicycles with about 26-inch wheels.
Converting a bicycle to electric takes three steps. In our Kampala workshop, the whole job takes about an hour.
- Fit the motor wheel. The rear wheel is replaced with a 250W geared hub motor wheel (the front wheel only as a special build), built to match your bike’s size.
- Mount the battery. The removable battery mounts to the frame, wired to the controller.
- Pair the app. The controller pairs to the Karaa app on your phone, which sets your ride mode: eco, climbing, manual or cargo.
Which bicycles qualify?
Most bicycles qualify. The kit needs a bicycle on about 26-inch wheels, with a sound frame and working brakes; other wheel sizes are built to the bike’s own rim on request. What comes in the box
The box contains the motor wheel, the removable battery, the controller, a charger and the fittings. Nothing about your bicycle is thrown away except the old wheel, and you keep that too.
Riding a converted bicycle
Once fitted, you pedal as before; the motor works with you. Hills flatten out. Headwinds stop mattering. The battery charges from any wall socket, the same one that charges your phone.
The Karaa Range kit costs UGX 1,650,000, fitted, and does up to 120 km per charge. It carries a motor warranty of 10,000 km or one year.
