What owning a bicycle already does to a household’s income
A two-year study by IDinsight and World Bicycle Relief in Mumbwa, Zambia found that owning a bicycle raised household monthly consumption by ZMW 1,190 (about $47), a 29% increase. Women who received a bicycle earned roughly 50% more each month than before. Electrifying that same bicycle doesn’t change what it already does for a household, it adds to it.
The study ran two rounds. At the first check (Endline I), households with a bicycle already showed a ZMW 875 (about $33) rise in monthly consumption, a 24% increase. By the second round (Endline II), that had grown to ZMW 1,190, 29%. Community health workers who received bicycles served 63% more households than those without one. Across the trial, researchers calculated a 14.7-to-1 social return on investment, with households generating an estimated $3,188 in economic benefit over five years from one bicycle.
World Bicycle Relief distributes the Buffalo Bicycle across East and Southern Africa, the same bicycle Karaa converts into an electric one. WBR’s own research doesn’t cover electrification, it’s outside their mandate, they study the bicycle as it is. But the logic carries forward directly: if a standard bicycle raises household income by nearly a third, a faster, longer-range version of the same bicycle should do at least as much, likely more, for the same rider doing the same work in less time and over more distance.
This isn’t a claim Karaa is making about its own riders yet, we haven’t run our own study. It’s the strongest existing evidence for why electrifying a Buffalo Bicycle matters commercially, not just as a nicer way to ride, but as a change to what a household can earn from owning one.
