The REF fat bike, electrified
Some routes eat ordinary bicycles: loose murram, sand, wet clay, kerbs. For those routes we electrify REF bikes, whose wide tyres shrug off ground that pinches a normal wheel.
REF is the bike brand of Sawan India Overseas, a Ludhiana manufacturer exporting bicycles and parts since 1999. We convert two of their models: the REF fat bike, pictured here with one of our riders in Kampala, and the REF MX01 hardtail, with Shimano gears, hydraulic disc brakes and a suspension fork.
The conversion is the same system that runs every Karaa: a motor wheel, a removable battery good for up to 120 km, and the app with GPS tracking and remote lock. Fat tyres plus pedal assist is a forgiving combination; the bike floats where others sink, and the motor erases the extra rolling weight.
