What e-bikes do to online delivery cost
Online retail in East Africa runs on delivery riders. The cost and reliability of that last leg decides whether an order arrives on time and whether the margin on it survives.
Petrol motorcycles are quick but expensive to run. Ordinary bicycles are cheap but capped by what a rider can carry and how far they’ll pedal in a shift. A Karaa kit on a standard bicycle gives an operator the throughput of a powered bike without the fuel bill: 100 kg on the rack, 32 km/h assisted, up to 120 km on a charge (50 to 100 km in real use), and a battery that recharges from any socket in six to seven hours.
Where the margin shows up
For a courier business, the gain shows up per order rather than as one headline number: more deliveries possible per rider per shift, a lower cost per drop (about UGX 700 of electricity per 100 km against roughly UGX 15,000 in petrol), and a removable battery that swaps in seconds so a bike isn’t parked on a charger during the busiest hours of the day.
The optional GPS tracking package (UGX 245,000) adds visibility: where each bike is, how hard it’s being worked, and remote immobilisation if one goes missing.
Fitting the bikes you already run
Kits are assembled in Kampala and fit to the bicycles a fleet already owns, including Buffalo bicycles. Scaling a delivery operation this way doesn’t mean buying a fleet of new vehicles; it means converting the ones already on the road. The Range kit starts at UGX 1,650,000; motors carry a 10,000 km or one-year warranty, batteries 500 cycles or one year.
Is converting a fleet cheaper than buying new electric bikes?
Usually, yes. A conversion kit fits a bicycle your riders already know and trust, at roughly a third of the cost of a new complete electric bike, with the same battery, app and warranty terms either way.
