Electric bikes for African farms
On a farm or at a collection point, the bicycle already does real work: moving feed, milk, produce and tools between the field, the store and the road. What limits it is the rider's legs and how much the rack will carry.
A Karaa kit removes that limit without replacing the bicycle. The kit adds a 250W motor and a removable 36V battery (522 Wh on the Range kit) to a standard 26 or 29-inch bicycle, so a collection rider carries up to 100 kg over up to 120 km on a charge (50 to 100 km in typical use on rough roads). There’s no fuel bill, and the battery charges from a wall socket or a solar installation with spare daytime capacity.
The battery does more than move the bike
This is what changes the maths for an off-grid farm or a dairy hub. The same 36V pack that drives the bike can run a small solar pump for irrigation or livestock water, and power lighting and phone charging when it’s parked. One asset moves goods by day and does other work the rest of the time, instead of a generator or a second machine sitting idle.
What it costs
A Karaa Lite kit (short-range, bottle battery, up to 60 km) starts at UGX 990,000. The Range kit, built for longer collection routes, is UGX 1,650,000 and does up to 120 km per charge. Both fit bikes already on the farm, including Buffalo bicycles, which are already common across Zambian, Malawian and Kenyan farm cooperatives. Motors carry a 10,000 km or one-year warranty; batteries, 500 charge cycles or one year.
Can a Karaa kit run irrigation or lighting, not just the bike?
Yes. The removable battery isn’t wired only to the motor. Take it off the bike and it runs a pump, lights, or charges phones and other devices, which suits farms and hubs where both transport and power are in short supply.
